Cross Pear Creek at 0.2. A newer trail matching the forest service map takes off to the left at 0.5 miles and remains well above the left bank of the Dearborn. Take the right fork to follow Wolf's guide.

The newer trail 206 enters the Steamboat Mtn Quad at 1.0 mi. The junction with Trail 207 is at mile 1.6. Cross the Dearborn at 1.8 and reach the old trail 206 at 1.9. There are 4 different trails in this area near the junction. Head west (on new tread?) to cross Blacktail Creek at 2.2. I estimate this route is about .7 miles longer taking the new trail.

The Trail now descends along or to the west of the ridge from 9.3 to 10.1 (7700') before cutting back to the left. As a result it misses the waterhole descibed in Wolf's original text - which can be reached by hiking up the dry creek (10.3) to the northwest corner of the cirque. The new route traverses at a lower elevation (7500'), passing a pond and camp at 10.5. It ends up at the same point on the Divide(11.6).
